Review Make Change That Lasts

I recently finished reading Dr. Rangan Chatterjee's "Make Change That Lasts," and while I have mixed feelings about the physical book itself, the content is undeniably superb. Let me start by saying I'm a huge fan of Dr. Chatterjee's "Feel Better, Live More" podcast, so I had high expectations. The book delivers on many fronts, offering a thoughtful and accessible approach to lasting positive change. It's not just another self-help book filled with vague platitudes; it's a blend of ancient wisdom and modern scientific understanding, providing practical tools and techniques to help readers break free from unhelpful habits.

Dr. Chatterjee's writing style is incredibly engaging. He’s personable, compassionate, and never condescending. He shares personal anecdotes that resonate deeply, making the concepts relatable and inspiring. The nine simple ways he outlines—from understanding your body's signals to embracing discomfort and giving more than you get—are presented in a clear, structured way, making them easy to understand and implement. The accompanying worksheets are a valuable addition, encouraging active participation and self-reflection. I found myself nodding along frequently, recognizing my own reliance on certain habits and feeling empowered to address them.

However, the physical presentation of the US edition left much to be desired. The black and white printing, particularly the full-page photos, felt jarring and out of place. While I understand this was a publisher's error and not Dr. Chatterjee's fault, it significantly detracted from the overall reading experience. The photos, intended to be visually appealing, came across as awkward and sometimes even comical in their monochrome rendition. Many readers, myself included, initially found this disappointing, and I can see why some gave lower ratings solely based on this issue.

It's important to note that the printing error shouldn't overshadow the book's core value. Dr. Chatterjee's message is powerful and impactful, regardless of the book's aesthetics. The insights provided are valuable and have already started to shape my approach to daily life. I've found myself more mindful of my habits, more accepting of discomfort, and more intentional about my responses to everyday stressors.

In short, "Make Change That Lasts" is a truly worthwhile read. The practical advice, combined with Dr. Chatterjee's empathetic and inspiring tone, makes it a valuable resource for anyone looking to make positive, lasting changes in their lives. The black and white printing is a significant drawback, but I wholeheartedly recommend overlooking this flaw and focusing on the book's truly excellent content. I'm already planning to revisit certain chapters and incorporate more of the strategies into my daily routine. I would definitely purchase the color version if and when it becomes available. The message itself remains powerful and resonates profoundly – a testament to the author's genuine commitment to helping others thrive.
